Thursday July 28th Part 3
After having a rest at home and charging up our phones a bit, we changed clothes and headed two blocks away to catch a cab from the piazza a couple blocks away from our place.
I'm always a but nervous when taking a cab in a foreign place with the whole family in case we go on a scenic tour somewhere dangerous or super expensive but we wound our way up the mountain and the cab that was supposedly going to be 15 Euro was only 10. Love that!
The cab stopped RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FERRARI I WAS DRIVING.
I cannot tell a lie - heart was racing a bit. We paid the bill and I went to get things arranged while Krista and the boys took multiple photos of each other beside the car.
Alberto was the only guy who spoke English and we had a fabulous conversation telling jokes and laughing. He was normally the paperwork guy but I talked him into being my passenger for the ride!
We unlocked the car, rolled the windows down and took a bunch of photos of Jacob sitting in it. I climbed into the drivers seat and immediately fell in love with Ferraris...
It took a few minutes to familiarize myself with all the bells and whistles. 7 speed with paddles on the back of the steering wheel to change gears. Signal lights on the front of the steering wheel. Everything right in front of you so you don't have to reach for anything.
I chose to start out in automatic having not driven in a week. Thankfully everyone was driving on the right side of the road so that helped.
We backed up incredibly slowly as cars darted in and out of the parking lot like lunatics not to mention cyclists coming and going everywhere and people walking wherever they want. Tourists leave their minds at home and just look where they want to go and completely ignore speeding cars and buses. It's at miracle we haven't seen anyone run over yet.
I eased into traffic - ha - whatever - I gunned it from 0-40mph and immediately caught up to the guy ahead of me as my passenger dude held onto the side handle saying some mild expletive in Italian. It was all good.
We wound through the hillside going slowly and then accelerating like mad til we caught up to the guy ahead of us. This car had 570 hp and was made to go FAST. The speedometer topped out at 350 kph. WHAT! !!?
(Alberto said he had it up to 330 and it started to vibrate a bit so he eased off - Crazy!)
We stopped about 3km away and turned around. This thing had a turning radius about the same as my 3/4 ton truck back home! We had to turn all the way, then back up turning the other way. I raced onto traffic and caught up to the next guy far too quickly. This thing had power.
In no time at all we returned to the parking lot. I pulled in as Krista was videoing me and the boys watched on in amazement. What a cool experience. 75 Euros for 25 minutes including 2 memory cards 8 gig each.
What a great thing to do in Italy!
